DIY gate for the mantel

Tawk of the day:  If you don't stand for something, you'll end up falling for anything <3

Hey-
I hope everyone had a great Memorial Weekend!

I have a super project to show you today! .. Very cool if you are needing a new look for your fireplace or just any ole' mantel!

I seen a DIY gate from Donna @ Funky Junk.
I FELL IN LOVE WITH IT!!!
My mantel needed a facelift so I decided I'd try an attempt this..

With much needed help from the hubby cutting and nailing, we finally got it done!!! .. Well, the hard work anyways.. lol .. Now it needed to be painted (After a little sanding of course!)

I painted some streaks of bright blue/turquoise, maroon, and dark brown..
I figured with these colors showing through, they would give my gate an 'old' effect since the wood was practically brand new anyways.

Painted the whole thing cream when that dried..
(My intensions were to paint a little then with duct tape, apply it to the gate then rip it off.. ripping the cream color off so the blue, red, brown showed through... that was a FAIL!) It did not work.. soooo..

After I painted the whole thing in a cream color, it just wasn't yet speaking to me!
So I mixed some dark brown craft paint with some glaze (not sure how much of each.. just a splash!)
Not even sure if you should mix glaze with craft paint, but guess what I did.. it looked great when finished..
I didn't add poly or a top coat.. just left as is!

I used hinges from an old picture frame that was being used as decoration.
This was PERFECT.. I knew I was saving that frame for something *special* :)

I love that I can exchange wreaths for the seasons without having to display a whole different thing on my mantel.
I will keep this gate for a long time I think!

Don't ya just LOVE?
I do have to secure it to the wall somehow to prevent from falling and injuring somebody! lol
The hubby says he'll hang it with wire and a screw to the wall..

*I LOVE my gate, but the original is much "CUTER"..*
You can find it @ FunkyJunkInteriors.net
under Unique Projects.

MEASUREMENTS:
If I can remember correctly,
I used 5   31.5 x 4.5 inch boards
2    4 x 23.5 inch boards for the top and bottom going across
The middle diaginal (sp?) I just eye balled a narrow piece of wood

From Kitchen Cabinet, to Shoe Cubby..

Tawk of the day: . . .

So I got a transformation for younz, :)
While driving to church one sunday morning I spotted a house with a bunch of crap laying out near the road...
I liked what I saw (especially since it was free!!) .. So I said if it was still hanging there on our way home from church that I would snatch it up and take it home with me...
IT WAS STILL THERE! {score} .. I loaded it up in the back of the odyssey after I knocked on the lady's door just to make sure it was free.
Weather got cold so I didn't work on it for a few months, as it sat in the garage collecting dust.
I finally brought it down to our basement and went to town with it, already having an idea in mind.
***
Here is what it looked like BEFORE I started working .. :(

***
DURING ..

(I didn't sand it much, beings I didn't know if the paint job already on it would have lead in it)
So I just did some 'light' sanding with my sander :)

I usually wake up around 6:30, pack lunch for the husband, and drink 2 cups of coffee while blogging/facebooking... and the little boy sleeps in normally until 9-9:30..
So this is what I call my 'MOMMY TIME' .. 3 hours of silence, yesssss please :)
Time to do what I want! .. And this time I [wanted my cabinet finished!]

***
&&&&& This is what it looks like NOW .. :)

Steps following sanding:
1.) Prime EVERY PIECE!
2.) Paint cubby in Krylon Banner Red.
3.) Glaze over the Banner Red.
4.) Cover inside shelves with contact paper (I got mine at TjMaxx for 5.99 for (2) 2.5 ft x 10 ft rolls)
5.) Cover inside of cubby with the contact paper also (this lifts the looks of the cubby SO MUCH!)
6.) Spray paint the cubby doors Rustoleum Painter's Touch Canyon Black SATIN.
7.) Measure and cover the inside of the door with contact paper.
8.) Spray paint the door hardware in the same Black Color.
9.) Replace the hinges... I didn't realize til looking back on the 'before' pictures that this time around the hubby put the hinges on backwards so the doors do not connect.. but actually, I think I like it better!!! :)
LOVE IT!

HAPPY CRAFTING!! Hope you liked this Transformation!!

I can, SEW can you!

"tawk" of the day:  My new favorite color is Valspar's Twilight Meadows! :) LOVE IT, thanks LIZMARIEBLOG.com for suggesting it!

Speaking of Twilight Meadows...
This is the color of choice I used on my project I'm going to show you today ;)

Meet my {very} boring sewing machine.
This was given to me from a friend--I love her for that, but didn't so much love the look of it..
This morning I decided I was going to do a transformation.
I was already heading into town for groceries and figured I'd also stop at Lowe's on top of the hill and purchase a new sanding block ($4.something) and a paint sample ($2.97)

I put the little one down for a nap and immediately got to work!!
HERE is my sewing machine BEFORE:

&& HERE it is AFTER:

The next couple pictures are just 'process' pictures..
I skipped the whole primer thing and just painted two coats of the Twilight Meadows.

After I let this baby dry (mind you, it dries VERY QUICK!)
I sanded the crap outta the top of the table..

*So I took a little break from my work and got the little one when he was done with his nap, and drove to the local Trader Horn (they have EVERYTHING!)
I purchased some MINWAX Dark Walnut wood stain and some Rustoleum Painter's Touch clear matte spray bottle.

This is a picture of the aftermath of the stain.. I LOVE this stain!!

During the drying process of this thing, I repainted the hardware (just for show..) black.
At first I thought about buying just a cool drawer handle I saw for $2.00.. but I figured the less money I needed to spend on this baby, the better :)
Anyways, it still looks cool I think!

The next couple pictures are just some close ups on the sanding job.
I used a 60 grit sanding block.
Next time I do a piece of furniture, I'll prolly use just regular sanding paper (but I've never really done this before so I didn't really know what I needed.)

This is my sewing machine all ready for use!

Don't you just love this color!?
Thankyou,  LIZ from LIZMARIEBLOG.COM
If you'd like to see my inspiration for this project just go to ::: Liz Marie's SEWING TABLE!

Last, but not least, I sprayed with Rustoleum Painter's Touch Clear Matte spray.

Magnetic Makeup Board {change-up}

tawk of the day
Hug your mommies tight this Mother's Day -- You never know when it'll be your last year with her

Hello Followers :)
(and if you are not a follower, be sure to!)

I decided to give my magnetic makeup board a change-up...
I was getting bored with the original one here-
And here is the tutorial for it!

And here is what it looks like now:::

All I did to change it up was to simply take it all apart (which was a pain)
Repaint the frame black (skip the primer)
Remove the old fabric background around the piece of metal and exchange it for burlap
Make cute little flowers out of black felt and cute buttons from an old shirt...
Here is the pin I saw of these:
There is a website for it.. but c'mon.. the picture is pretty well self explainatory!

Happy Crafting!! :) Hope you like the CHANGE-up!!!

Spring/Summer Burlap Wreaths!!

Products Needed:

Wire Wreath
Burlap- 4 inches wide.. Length depends on how tight you make it
Scissors
Decorative pieces

I followed THIS  tutorial,
This is HER wreath:

I did not make my wreath as fluffy as hers.. I made it more tight.

My porch isn't anywhere NEAR what I would like it to look like right now, but these cute little wreaths are a start...

After I got my wreaths all done, I took a trip to JoAnn's and looked around for something Summery to put on them!  These little flowers are perfect! $2.99 reg. / On sale for 1.49!
And they are even more perfect because they have a little clip attached to them, so I didn't have to worry about tying them on there! Phew!
